Mulch is a layer of material placed on top of the soil.

That is the simple answer.

But mulch is also one of the easiest and most powerful ways to care for soil. It protects the ground, feeds soil life, helps hold moisture, reduces weeds, and slowly improves the structure of the soil underneath.

In nature, soil is rarely left bare. In a woodland, leaves fall. In a meadow, grasses bend, die back, and return to the earth. In a hedgerow, twigs, seeds, petals, feathers, and plant material gather on the surface. This natural covering protects the soil and becomes food for worms, fungi, bacteria, beetles, and all the tiny organisms that help create healthy soil.

Mulching is simply a way of copying this natural process in a garden, allotment, orchard, farm, or growing space.

Instead of leaving the soil exposed to sun, wind, rain, and erosion, we cover it.

What Does Mulch Do?

Mulch acts like a protective blanket for the soil.

It can help keep moisture in, soften the impact of rain, reduce weed growth, protect plant roots, and feed the soil as it breaks down.

A good mulch does not just make a garden look tidy. It supports the whole soil ecosystem.

Healthy soil needs cover, organic matter, moisture, air, and living roots. Mulch helps with several of these at once.

Why Bare Soil Is a Problem

Bare soil might look neat, but it is not how nature usually works.

When soil is left uncovered, it can suffer from:

  • drying out in the sun
  • erosion from wind and rain
  • compaction from heavy rainfall
  • loss of organic matter
  • temperature extremes
  • fewer worms and soil organisms
  • weed seeds germinating quickly
  • surface crusting and cracking

Bare soil is exposed soil.

Inorganic mulch is made from materials that do not break down quickly, or do not feed the soil in the same way.

Examples include:

  • gravel
  • stones
  • slate
  • landscape fabric
  • plastic sheeting
  • rubber mulch
  • decorative glass

These materials can suppress weeds and reduce evaporation, but they do not feed soil life like organic mulch does.

Some inorganic mulches can be useful in specific places, such as paths, dry gardens, around Mediterranean plants, or decorative areas. But for soil health, organic mulch is usually the better choice.

How Mulch Benefits the Soil

1. Mulch Helps Soil Hold Moisture

One of the biggest benefits of mulch is moisture retention.

A layer of mulch shades the soil and slows down evaporation. This means the soil stays damp for longer after rain or watering.

This is helpful for plants because their roots have access to moisture for longer. It is also helpful for soil life, because worms, fungi, and microbes need moisture to thrive.

In dry summers, mulch can make a big difference. Plants growing in mulched soil often cope better with heat and drought stress than plants growing in bare soil.

2. Mulch Reduces Weeds

Mulch helps suppress weeds by blocking light from reaching the soil surface.

Many weed seeds need light to germinate. When the soil is covered, fewer seeds get the conditions they need to grow.

Mulch will not stop every weed, but it can make weeding much easier.

A thick enough layer of compost, straw, woodchip, cardboard, or leaf mould can reduce weed pressure significantly. Any weeds that do appear are often easier to pull because the soil underneath stays softer and moister.

Worms, bacteria, fungi, beetles, springtails, mites, woodlice, and other decomposers all help break down mulch. As they feed, move, and digest, they turn rough organic matter into rich soil.

Different mulches feed different organisms. Soft green materials, like grass clippings or comfrey, break down quickly and feed bacteria. Woody materials, like woodchip and bark, break down more slowly and support fungi.

Organic mulch helps create this over time.

Woody mulches such as woodchip, bark, leaves, small prunings, and ramial chipped wood can support fungal activity.

Fungi help break down tough plant material, cycle nutrients, improve soil structure, and form relationships with plant roots.

If you lift an old layer of woodchip mulch, you may see white threads running through it. These are often fungal mycelium, quietly doing excellent underground work. Tiny woodland internet, basically.

9. Mulch Can Reduce Watering

Because mulch helps soil stay moist, it can reduce how often you need to water.

This is especially useful in:

  • vegetable gardens
  • raised beds
  • containers
  • fruit bushes

Cardboard

Manure Compost

Well-rotted manure can be a rich mulch for hungry plants.

Seaweed

How Thick Should Mulch Be?

The right thickness depends on the type of mulch and where you are using it.

As a general guide:

  • compost: 2-5 cm
  • woodchip: 5-10 cm
  • straw: 5-10 cm
  • leaf mould: 3-8 cm
  • grass clippings: very thin layers only
  • cardboard: one or two layers, covered with another mulch
  • bark: 5-8 cm

Very thin mulch may not suppress weeds well. Very thick mulch can hold too much moisture, block air, or create hiding places for slugs.

The aim is to cover the soil without smothering it.

How to Apply Mulch

Mulching is simple.

First, remove any large weeds you do not want. Water the soil if it is very dry. Then spread your chosen mulch over the surface.

Keep mulch slightly away from the stems of plants, especially young plants and trees. Piling mulch directly against stems or trunks can encourage rot and pest problems.

Think doughnut, not volcano.

Around trees, leave a gap around the trunk and spread mulch in a wide circle over the root zone. Around vegetables, tuck mulch between plants once they are established.

When Is the Best Time to Mulch?

You can mulch at many times of year, but spring and autumn are especially useful.

Spring

Spring mulching helps lock in moisture before dry weather arrives. It also feeds soil life as temperatures rise.

Mulch after the soil has warmed a little and after removing early weeds.

Summer

Summer mulch helps reduce evaporation and protect roots from heat.

This is useful around tomatoes, courgettes, pumpkins, beans, fruit bushes, and containers.

Autumn

Autumn is a brilliant time to mulch.

The soil is still relatively warm, rainfall is increasing, and leaves and plant residues are abundant. Mulching in autumn protects soil over winter and gives worms and microbes plenty to work on.

Winter

Winter mulch protects bare soil from heavy rain, erosion, and nutrient leaching.

It is especially useful on empty beds, around perennials, and in no-dig systems.

Can You Mulch Around All Plants?

Most plants benefit from mulch, but the type matters.

Moisture-loving plants, vegetables, fruit bushes, trees, shrubs, and woodland plants usually love organic mulch.

Mediterranean herbs such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, and sage often prefer free-draining conditions. Around these plants, gravel or a light mineral mulch may be better than thick, damp organic mulch.

Tiny seedlings can struggle if buried under mulch, so wait until they are established before mulching close around them.

Mulch and No-Dig Gardening

Mulch is central to no-dig gardening.

In no-dig systems, compost or organic matter is added to the soil surface instead of being dug in. Soil organisms then incorporate it naturally.

This protects the soil structure and supports the living networks below ground.

No-dig gardeners often use compost, cardboard, straw, leaves, and plant residues to create fertile, covered beds.

The basic idea is simple: feed from the top, let soil life do the mixing.

Use clean materials where possible and avoid mulching with weeds that have already seeded.

Nitrogen Robbing

Woody material can temporarily tie up nitrogen if it is mixed into the soil.

This is why fresh woodchip is usually best left on the surface, especially around trees, shrubs, and paths. On the surface, it breaks down slowly and safely.

Too Much Moisture Around Stems

Mulch piled against plant stems or tree trunks can cause rot.

Always leave a little space around the base of plants.

Contaminated Materials

Be careful with manure, straw, hay, and grass clippings if they may contain herbicide residues.

Some persistent herbicides can damage garden plants even after passing through animals or composting. If you are unsure, test a small amount before spreading widely.

What Should You Not Use as Mulch?

Avoid using:

  • diseased plant material
  • invasive weeds
  • weeds with seed heads
  • fresh manure around edible crops
  • thick piles of wet grass
  • treated or painted wood
  • glossy cardboard or plastic-coated paper
  • materials sprayed with herbicides
  • rubber mulch in food-growing areas

Good mulch should protect and support the soil, not create new problems.

A Simple Beginner Mulch Recipe

For a vegetable bed, try this:

  1. Remove large weeds.
